Gasket Miter Cutter

I designed a mechanism that allows one to cut a rubber gasket at a desired angle and length.

This design project came from a supervisor request at Lozier. They needed a quick way to cut rubber gaskets at a 45-degree angle. They also wanted the gaskets to be cut to 2 separate lengths of 12 and 14 inches. I designed the mechanism shown in the left photo.

The device worked by lining up the gasket in the slot, then pressing down on each lever arm. The gasket was then the correct size and angle. If a different length was desired, the center piece could be removed and the new correct size slots into place.

The project was very useful to Lozier because it allowed them to use the device for production if it were fixed up. This was my preliminary design. If I were to make this an approved mechanism, I would enclose the razor blades in a protective case to prevent cutting a finger.
